A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL

Theo trod through the dim corridor, his steps tentative, unsure of where he was or why he was there. His faltering steps infuriated him, the sense of caution … of fear teeming along his skin like sweat.

“Your specter blooms in the night, I wish I could hold you tight.” The voice wrapped around him like a summer’s evening.

Von.

The musician he’d met in Italy, in the villa where he’d tethered Donna’s—the woman with the third eye—soul. Theo’s heart drummed against his ribcage as he realized that’s where he was. The Tuscan villa.

“Like smoke whispering through me, you’re there then gone…” Von’s ethereal song seemed to suffuse the murk with color. He followed her voice with surer steps, his pulse pounding for a different reason—her tone was as full of want as her lyrics.

Want for me.

Rounding the doorway, Theo’s gaze struck Von—raven-haired and eyed, her pale face swam in the gloom, her parted lips an invitation. She wore the same high-collared lace blouse and tulle skirt she had when they’d fucked. As if she’d never left.

As if she’s been waiting for me.

Within seconds, Theo crossed the threshold, his mouth devouring hers, his kisses heavy with the same want that had filled her words. His hand fisted those raven locks, his other ripping the tulle skirt.

So damned kissable and rippable.

But something crackled, distracting Theo from Von’s voluptuous lips. His eyes darted around, shock hammering through him as cracks wound down the walls and across the ceiling. The place was falling down. Theo tried to pull Von towards the door, but she wouldn’t budge from the bed: a dead weight in his arms.

Theo wanted to run; new urgency filled him as pieces of rubble rained down around them.

“Von!” he screamed, the terror in his tone grating on him to such a degree that he pulled at her with more violence. His wrenching of her arms should have broken them, but she didn’t budge an inch. There was no softness or animation about her now. He watched with horror as cracks ran over her as if she were part of the crumbling structure. Yet, her mouth unsealed and sang, “These walls stand tall, but they will fall unless you name them the home they are.”

And with that, Von’s form crumbled, dissolving into dust and enveloping Theo. His heart seemed to bulldoze through his chest and right into the remaining walls as they caved in around him.

Theo thrashed awake, his sheets strangling him. His heart pounded through his temples, his skin slick with sweat. He gasped for air, his mouth tasting like chalk. This was the second time he’d tried to sleep since Jess had escaped Nox with her father. Both times, Von had appeared in the unsettled landscape of his dreams.

Jess has fucking done this to me when she untethered those souls from me. Like Donna.

The woman with the third eye had been ripped from Theo. Along with hundreds of other souls from his horde. The magnitude of that devastating loss filled him.
